Laboratory Equipment Technician Supervisor - Administration

The mission of the Allen Institute Administration team is to provide support and structure to the scientific divisions. Coinciding with the team science approach, administration helps facilitate team learning and the institute’s overall mission.

The Lab Equipment Support team is looking for a Laboratory Equipment Technician Supervisor to supervise a team of technicians responsible for laboratory equipment installation, maintenance, relocation and decommission. This position will collaborate with internal customers and external partners to ensure laboratory equipment are maintained on schedule and downtime is minimized. They will create schedules, assign work, approve timecards, make requisitions, and do performance reviews for direct reports. A successful candidate will have significant experience in servicing equipment, good communication and leadership skills, and excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee laboratory equipment installation, maintenance, relocation, and decommission
  • Train and supervise the activities of junior Lab Equipment Technicians
  • Create schedule, approve timecards, make requisitions, and do performance reviews
  • Liaise with internal customers and external partners to ensure equipment are maintained on schedule and minimized downtime
  • Track and monitor the status of incidents and requests
  • Database data entry
  • Work efficiently in a team environment
  • Develop, optimize and document work procedures
  • Be available for on-call rotation every 2-4 weeks

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Proficient with hand tools
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3+ years servicing equipment in a life science lab
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated history of critical thinking and proactive problem-solving
  • Established track record of team leadership
  • Ability to multi-task, train and delegate
  • Excellent work ethic displayed as a reliable, self-motivated, enthusiastic team player

Work Environment

  • Laboratory atmosphere - possible exposure to chemical, biological or other hazardous substances

Physical Demands

  • Working at computer for extended periods of time
  • Sitting, standing, bending, squatting as found in typical office and laboratory environment
  • Able to lift or move up to 30 lbs.
  • Reaching or climbing ladders

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is an essential job, and you are expected to report for work regardless of weather and/or other conditions
  • Rotating evening and weekend on-call coverage
  • This role is currently working onsite and is expected to work onsite for the majority of working hours. The primary work location for this role is 615 Westlake Ave N., with the flexibility to work remotely on a limited basis.

Annualized Salary Range

  • $ 77,250 - $108,150*

* Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
