Data Support Technician II - Data Publishing

The mission of the Allen Institute for Brain Science is to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Using a big science approach, we generate useful public resources, drive technological and analytical advances, and discover fundamental brain properties through the integration of experiments, modeling, and theory.

We are seeking a detail-oriented Data Support Technician to join the Data & Technology team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing data transfer and digital publishing for our research projects and scientific products, ensuring that data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. This position will interact regularly with scientists, IT staff, data engineers, and others to ensure that data is managed effectively and efficiently to support the institute’s research objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with research teams to ensure data is properly documented, organized, and prepared for transfer and publication
  • Package, transfer and publish data using appropriate protocols and standards
  • Audit data quality, integrity and availability and provide KPIs for data publishing
  • Researching and identify solutions to issues related to data formats, compression, and transfer
  • Manage data collections to ensure integrity and completeness, and ensure accurate tracking of data publishing, confirmation of availability, and validation of files for integrity
  • Collaborate with data archives, repositories, or other publishers to resolve issues and support process improvements
  • Collaborate with other software engineers to integrate data transfer processes and scripts with a services-based platform
  • Prioritize and manage open issues

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree, or certificate in computer science, information management or related field; or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant postbac work experience
  • Proven work experience as a Technical Support Engineer, Help Desk Technician, or similar role
  • Experience developing processes both procedural and software based
  • Strong communication skills and customer focus
  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python), and database queries (e.g., SQL)
  • Experience with cloud services and with data transfer protocols such as FTP, HTTPS, Aspera, Globus and others

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 2 - 5 years of relevant postbac work experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.

Annualized Salary Range

  • $72,200 - $96,250 *
    • * Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
