The mission of the Allen Institute for Immunology is to advance the fundamental understanding of human immunology through the study of immune health and diseases where excessive or impaired immune responses drive pathological processes. The Institute will employ a multi-disciplinary team approach in collaboration with academic centers of human immunology to generate novel mechanistic insights into the immune synapse in health and in diseases such as autoimmunity or oncology. The Institute will simultaneously provide a foundational data set and tools for future immunological research as well as a novel collaboration portal for the broader scientific community.

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Technical Program Manager to join the Allen Institute for Immunology’s agile software engineering team to manage our software programs. This person will help manage a cloud-based ecosystem consisting of a laboratory management system and a research platform to gather, analyze, interpret, and share findings. You are a subject matter expert on the provided software solutions. You will work with scientists, computational biologists, data scientists and software engineers to transform complex requirements into software solutions and working closely with them to incorporate user feedback as part of the iterative development cycle.

Essential Functions

  • Lead program scoping with architecture, engineering, and other stakeholders
  • Gather requirements, and provide technical design for new product features
  • Program manage the development, implementation and rollout of releases
  • Verify solutions accuracy through user testing, analysis of usage patterns
  • Track usage costs and predict financial forecasts
  • Understand the life sciences research domain
  • Acting as a technical liaison, work closely with account engineering to onboard new customers on the research platform
  • Help users with troubleshooting and provide training where appropriate
  • Maintain a quarterly view of defined, prioritized, and scoped work
  • Communicate schedules, dependencies, issues, and risks across teams
  • Create solutions that solve real problems for customers, based on data analysis, user interviews, and feedback loops

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent combination of degree and experience
  • 3 years of experience working on a software development team and technical program management
  • Demonstrated software design experience developing cloud-based distributed computing systems
  • Demonstrated experience with back-end and front-end software design patterns
  • Demonstrated experience with programming languages like Java or GoLang, SQL and no-SQL databases
  • Demonstrated experience with Agile project management

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 3-5 years of equivalent experience
  • Experience with LIMS software
  • Experience with life sciences or healthcare
  • Passion for new technology and customer focused
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Work Environment

  • May enter laboratory environment, including potential exposure to lasers, biohazards

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment; lab equipment
  • Working at a computer and using a mouse for extended periods of time

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required
  • This role is currently working onsite and is expected to work onsite for the majority of working hours. The primary work location for this role is 615 Westlake Ave N., with flexibility to work remotely on a limited basis.
