Using an open science, multi-scale, team-oriented approach, the Allen Institute focuses on accelerating foundational research, developing standards and models, and cultivating new ideas to make a broad, transformational impact on science.

The MindScope program seeks to understand the transformations, sometimes called computations, in coding and decoding that lead from photons to behavior and conscious experience by observing, perturbing and modeling the physical transformations of signals in the cortical-thalamic visual system within a few perception-action cycles.  We do this using a team-based systems neuroscience approach that leverages standardized pipelines for neurosurgery and behavior, optical and electrophysiology, and computational modeling. 

We are seeking an Associate Scientific Project and Alliance Manager to join our program management team. In this role, you will support the execution of a portfolio of internal and grant-funded projects, working at the interface of multi-disciplinary teams of experimentalists, computational scientists, and engineers to deliver scientific impact.  As a leader and collaborator, you will build consensus and drive momentum to successfully complete projects. The successful candidate will have outstanding communication skills and a strong scientific foundation.

Essential Functions

  • In partnership with the co-leads for scientific projects, serve as the Project Manager to ensure the successful execution of project deliverables.
  • Support cross-functional teams through planning and execution phases, using project management best practices and tools.
  • Maintain clear and consistent channels of communication and documentation with internal and external stakeholders, leveraging software tools such as MS Teams, Slack, SharePoint, Smart Sheet, Confluence, etc.
  • Organize internal project meetings with clear agendas, expected outcomes, and follow-up on action items.
  • Keep project milestones on track, anticipating and communicating at-risk deliverables.
  • Support project teams with business-relevant processes including budgeting (forecasting and monitoring) and progress reporting.
  • Facilitate and support preparations for internal and external program reviews.
  • Represent the project teams with internal finance, legal, and communications groups.

Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. degree in biology, biomedical science, neuroscience, or related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in the use of project management, collaboration management, communication, and dashboard/reporting tools

Preferred Education and Experience

  • One or more years direct experience in a Project/Program Manager or Program Officer role, beyond an academic laboratory/post-doctoral setting
  • Formal project management training and/or PMP certification is a plus
  • Working knowledge of neuroscience, neurophysiology, and/or computational analysis methods
  • A team player with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; able to navigate challenging group dynamics, work effectively across scientific, technical, and business interfaces
  • Experience with grants and alliance management
  • Skilled in keeping sight of the bigger picture despite distraction, setting expectations and priorities accordingly

Physical Demands

  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds
  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment
  • Push/pull up to 50 lbs (pushing a cart, etc…)
  • Stooping, bending, crouching

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work a hybrid work schedule with the flexibility to work up to three days remotely per week. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.


  • Attendance and participation in national and international conferences may be required
