Simulation Infrastructure Engineer II - Cell Science

The mission of the Allen Institute for Cell Science is to create multi-scale visual models of cell organization, dynamics, and activities. The Cell Science team seeks a capable and passionate individual to contribute to the infrastructure for cloud-based applications that will support the visual analysis and communication of our cell biology research results.

The ideal candidate for this role will be:

  • skilled at interfacing across multiple groups and stakeholders who have different types of expertise
  • curious and enjoy learning new tools, techniques, and technologies relevant to distributed application design, development, and administration
  • interested in working on novel future-facing projects, including the Simularium project, an online platform for creating and sharing interactive visualizations of dynamic 3D biological simulations

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with developers to create and maintain continuous deployment systems
  • Collaborate with developers to develop, deploy, and support monitoring and orchestration services for web-based visualization and simulation tools

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, related field, or equivalent combination of degree and experience
  • Minimum 1 year of professional experience developing infrastructure solutions for cloud-native applications
  • Production experience in a public cloud environment (AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP)
  • Experience developing distributed web solutions
  • Experience scripting in a Linux environment

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 2-4 years of professional experience developing infrastructure solutions for cloud-native applications
  • Familiarity with cloud network architecture to support Websockets or other real-time web communication
  • Production experience with Kubernetes and EKS
  • Experience developing infrastructure for real-time interactive applications
  • Experience using Terraform

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Position Type

  • This role is currently able to work remotely due to COVID-19 and our focus on employee safety. We are a Washington State employer, and remote work must be performed in Washington State. We continue to evaluate the safest options for our employees. As restrictions are lifted in relation to COVID-19, this role will return to work onsite.
