DevOps Engineer III

The mission of the Allen Institute is to understand the principles that govern life and to advance health. We are seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer whose primary responsibility will be to ensure our data and services are secure, stable, and cost effective. Our infrastructure enables multiple scientific teams collecting peta-scale biological datasets to share data with the neuroscience community adhering to FAIR standards. The ideal candidate will be familiar with a variety of both open and proprietary modern data platforms and help build a sustainable architecture that will serve the long-term needs of the institute.

Essential Functions

  • Deploy and monitor core services in cloud and on-premise data centers
  • Add authentication and authorization layers for services and APIs
  • Build and deploy dashboards to monitor system health and telemetry
  • Build and deploy CI/CD pipelines
  • Help build and deploy end-to-end testing infrastructure for data processing pipelines

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field; or equivalent combination of degree and experience
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Advanced knowledge of containerization and orchestration frameworks
  • Experience deploying applications at scale in the cloud
  • Proficient with observability and telemetry frameworks
  • Experience with secrets management, authentication, and authorization frameworks
  • Proficient with Python and bash scripting languages
  • Experience working with Linux Operating Systems

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree and AWS professional certifications (S3, ECS, EC2, and serverless services)
  • Experience with deploying Docker containers to Kubernetes clusters
  • Experience with Cloud IaaC (terraform or CDK)
  • Experience deploying authentication and authorization frameworks for cloud resources (SSO, SAML, etc.)
  • Experience automating workflows with GitHub actions
  • Experience deploying Grafana, logging servers, metrics servers, etc.
  • Teamwork and communication skills operating in an Agile environment

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required
  • This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.

Annualized Salary Range

  • $137,050 - $171,250 *

* Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
