College Research Intern – Synapse Biology 

We are seeking an enthusiastic student intern to join a multi-disciplinary and collaborative research team in the Allen Institute for Brain Science.

The intern will be part of the Synapse Biology team. This position will provide an opportunity for the intern to learn a great deal about fluorescence and electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, neuroscience, and data analysis. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding and experience with molecular biology techniques in assistance to our research associates. 

Note this is a paid student position that will run from January/February 2019 through the end of June 2019

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Meticulous attention to detail and record keeping in laboratory procedures.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work independently and within a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Aptitude for learning and use of development-stage custom scientific software.
  • Understanding of basic principles of light microscopy
  • Strong interpersonal and organization skills, careful attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Proven ability to follow instructions and protocols precisely

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolled in college and actively pursuing a degree in neuroscience, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, materials science or relevant field
  • Experience making simple chemical solutions

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Laboratory atmosphere - possible exposure to chemical, biological or other hazardous substances 
  • Use of Class IV lasers and complex instrumentation
  • Sitting, standing, bending, squatting as found in typical office environment

ELIGIBILITY

  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

COMPENSATION

  • Intern will receive $15.00 per hour
