Scientist l - Optical Physiology

Our mission at the Allen Institute for Brain Science is to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Using a big science approach, we generate useful public resources, drive technological and analytical advances, and discover fundamental brain properties through integration of experiments, modeling and theory.

The Scientist will join the optical physiology department at the Allen Institute. Our research goals focus on using in vivo imaging techniques to characterize the activity of neurons in awake behaving animals (two photon imaging, Intrinsic imaging). The primary role of this scientist will be to perform computational analysis of large-scale neurophysiological datasets collected on cutting edge two photon platforms to look at functional interactions between areas and layers of the cortical visual system. In close collaboration with all members of the team, he/she will also maintain an automated data pipeline to go beyond the state of the art in data integrity.

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Perform basic and advanced analysis of large-scale multi-area calcium imaging datasets
  • Compile, processes and analyze data; evaluate and communicate results
  • Maintain an established data pipeline to monitor data integrity daily
  • Create objective metrics to quantify ongoing experiments
  • Publish results in peer reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences
  • Present periodic summary of progress to research community at institute
  • Assist in training team members

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in Neuroscience, Computational Neuroscience, Applied Math or related field
  • Strong programming ability for the use in scientific analysis
  • Coding experience using Python, SQL, GIT

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in systems neuroscience involving calcium imaging
  • Experience meeting aggressive timelines and deliverables
  • Exceptional attention to good coding practices.
  • Strong scientific publication record

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Sitting, standing, bending, squatting as found in typical office environment.
  • Occasional exposure to laboratory atmosphere - possible exposure to chemical, biological or other hazardous substances.
