Software Engineer lll

The Allen Institute for Brain Science seeks a Software Engineer III to join the Software Development Platform team, responsible for open scientific databases serving neuroscience and brain imaging research communities around the world.

Your colleagues will contribute high volume brain imaging experiments to your databases; scientific, computer vision, and other numerical software to process those data; and web applications that enable users to navigate, search, and visualize our data products.

We are currently working to open source much of our software, aligning with the Allen Institute's Core Principles of Team Science, Big Science, and Open Science. You will interact regularly with neuroscientists and a wide variety of engineers, collaborating in a large team working on new discoveries about the brain. Our team uses popular and modern software tools in our Linux based workflow.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership role building and maintaining scientific databases at production scale.
  • Design database schemas and associated software from high level functional requirements and team input.
  • Collaborate effectively with experts in diverse scientific and engineering topics, including neuroscience, high performance scientific computing, computer vision, and web applications.
  • Apply modern software engineering workflow, including emphasis on code review, continuous integration, and automatic testing.
  • Support software DevOps activities.


  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a team oriented software development environment.
  • Expert level development experience in a general purpose, dynamically typed object-oriented language (Ruby, Python).
  • Working knowledge of MVC frameworks for building data-driven web applications.
  • Proficient in SQL and database design.
  • Experience with command line development tools in a Linux environment.
  • Working knowledge of software toolchain, including source code management (git), build systems, debuggers, and profiling tools.


  • Advanced degree in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience refactoring existing code bases to improve maintainability.
  • Deep expertise in Linux server programming.
  • Experience with modern DevOps tools and practices.
  • Experience developing and migrating applications in cloud environments (AWS, Azure).
