Workshop Specialist (Limited – Term) – Data-Driven Discovery Center for Biology

The Data-Driven Discovery Center for Biology (D3B) is committed to pioneering the future of bioscience research by leveraging state-of-the-art computational techniques and data analytics. Our mission focuses on driving advancements in neuroscience, cellular biology, and immunology through the integration of computer science and biological research. As part of the Allen Institute, D3B aims to be a global leader in creating actionable insights from complex biological data.

We are seeking a Workshop Specialist to help us develop the Summer Workshop on the Dynamic Brain (SWDB) and related efforts for the summer of 2024. SWDB is a two-week intensive course co-organized by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington targeting graduate students and post-docs that uses tools and data from the Allen Institute to teach students to address questions in neuroscience. The course uses a range of data, including two-photon imaging, electrophysiology, and electron microscopy, as well as a variety of computational techniques using Python-based software packages. The successful candidate should have experience with systems neuroscience, data analysis, and have a passion for communicating technical ideas to eager students.

This position is a 40 hours per week Limited Term Assignment, with an expected duration between May 2024 to September 2024.

Essential Functions

  • Work with Scientists at the Allen Institute to prepare Jupyter Notebook based tutorials and problem sets demonstrating computational techniques, data access, and data analysis
  • Provide assistance with the technology behind the course to facilitate delivering data and computational tools to students
  • Help modify and prepare these materials for broader distribution beyond SWDB
  • As needed, develop Python-based software to facilitate these tutorials and compile informational resources regarding the tools and data

Applicant Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative science such as Neuroscience, Physics, Computer Science, or other closely related field
  • 0 - 2 years of relevant post-undergraduate research experience
  • Experience with data analysis with Python
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the internship
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Teaching Experience
  • Experience with git version control software, Jupyter Notebooks, and Jupyter Books
  • Positive attitude, self-motivated, and ability to troubleshoot
  • Ability to work independently and within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment to meet aggressive timelines
  • Enthusiasm for neuroscience, open science, and education

Physical Demands

  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds
  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment; repetitive motion with lab equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role will work onsite and is expected to work onsite for the majority of working hours. The primary work location for this role is 615 Westlake Ave N., with the flexibility to work remotely on a limited basis
  • From August 18th to September 1st, 2024, the work location is in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, WA

Compensation

  • $34.00 - $40.00 per hour
