Senior Manager, Media Relations – Administration

The mission of the Allen Institute is to unlock the complexities of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health. Using an open science, multi-scale, team-oriented approach, the Allen Institute focuses on accelerating foundational research, developing standards and models, and cultivating new ideas to make a broad, transformational impact on science.

The mission of the Allen Institute administration team is to provide support and structure to the scientific divisions. Coinciding with the team science approach, administration helps facilitate team learning and the overall mission of the institute.

We are seeking a strategic and thoughtful storyteller to join the Allen Institute Communications Team as Senior Manager, Media Relations. This role is responsible for leading the Institute’s media strategy and developing campaigns that burnish the Institute’s reputation as a global bioscience leader. They also partner with others on the Communications team to develop storytelling and social media strategies. Additionally, the Senior Manager, Media Relations builds and nurtures positive relationships with key writers, reporters, and correspondents across the media landscape.

This is a highly collaborative position that partners with key stakeholders across the Institute to showcase new scientific initiatives, scientific publications, scientific events and the Institute’s publicly available data, tools, and resources.

The Senior Manager, Media Relations reports to the Senior Director of Communications and will supervise members of the Content Creation Team. This team, which includes the Allen Institute’s Senior Writer, Senior Producer, and Digital Content Manager, creates and produces the Institute’s award-winning content. This includes written stories, press releases, video, photography, social media content and podcasts across many platforms, including Institute owned websites, social media channels, video, newsletters, and email.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise subordinates, providing management and oversight of daily operations, goal setting, team member mentorship and development coaching
  • Develop earned, owned, and shared media strategies to showcase the Allen Institute story in print, broadcast, and online media
  • Align media strategies with the Institute’s scientific goals and milestones, and partner with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment
  • Build and nurture positive relationships with key science writers, reporters, and correspondents at key print, online and broadcast media outlets
  • Manage media inquiries and interview requests in a timely manner
  • Develop, write, and distribute effective communications materials including press releases, messaging documents, talking points, briefing documents, and scripts
  • Provide media coaching and support for Institute leadership and scientific staff
  • Build and elevate external profiles for senior leaders and seek out external facing opportunities to drive visibility and thought leadership
  • Create and maintain media contact lists
  • Monitor, analyze, and communicate media relations results on a quarterly basis
  • Support the Communication Team’s response during crisis situations
  • Work in collaboration with the Marketing, Events and Outreach Team to promote Allen Institute events and education resources

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of degree and experience
  • 5 years of media/public relations experience with proven success garnering earned media
  • Proven superior writing skills across a range of mediums (press releases, reporter pitches, presentation scripts)

Preferred Education and Experience

  • BA/BS or MS Degree in public relations, journalism or communications
  • 7-10 years of media relations/public relations experience in life sciences, healthcare or academia
  • Proven success in developing and executing marquis media relations programs
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communications, writing, people management and project management skills

Physical Demands

  • Occasional lifting to 30 pounds
  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment
  • Standing and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Push/pull up to 50 pounds (pushing a cart)
  • Stooping, bending, crouching

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required
  • This role is currently able to work remotely due to COVID-19 and our focus on employee safety. We are a Washington State employer, and remote work must be performed in Washington State. We continue to evaluate the safest options for our employees. As restrictions are lifted in relation to COVID-19, this role will return to work onsite

Travel

  • Occasional travel, attendance and Allen Institute representation at relevant local, national and international conferences required
