Research Associate I - Neural Coding

The mission of the Allen Institute for Brain Science is to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Using a big science approach, we generate useful public resources, drive technological and analytical advances, and discover fundamental brain properties through integration of experiments, modeling, and theory.

The Neural Coding team at the Allen Institute for Brain Science is seeking a Research Assistant with a background in neuroscience or related biological sciences to support ongoing research projects investigating the large-scale circuitry of the brain. Experimental techniques include tissue-sectioning (working with microtomes and ultramicrotomes), immunohistochemistry, and microscopy. We seek an individual who will take responsibility for key tasks and work closely with other team members to achieve the team's goals. The successful applicant will receive training in all relevant techniques, but prior experience in some of these techniques would be beneficial.

Essential Functions

  • Professional handling of fixed and unfixed biological specimens
  • Experience with thin sectioning techniques using microtomes and cryostats
  • Immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, histology, and related tissue staining techniques
  • Light and confocal microscopy, image viewing in Fiji or Photoshop
  • Data tracking and organization via lab notebooks and spreadsheets
  • Support PhD-level scientists by assisting with their projects
  • Communicate effectively with others inside and outside the organization, e.g. through presentations within the institute and at scientific conferences, and publications in peer-reviewed journals

Required Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Neuroscience, Physiology or related discipline
  • Experience problem-solving and experiment managing skills
  • Proven ability to meet aggressive timelines and deliverables

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Practical experience in histology, sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a high-performance group environment

Work Environment

  • Laboratory environment, including potential exposure to lasers, biohazards

Physical Demands

  • Occasional lifting to 30 pounds
  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment, lab equipment
