DevOps Engineer II – Cell Science

The mission of the Allen Institute for Cell Science is to create multi-scale visual models of cell organization, dynamics, and activities. Our approach encompasses large scale data collection, observation, theory, and predictions to understand cellular behavior in normal and pathological contexts. As a division within the Allen Institute, the Allen Institute for Cell Science uses a team-oriented approach, focusing on accelerating foundational research, developing standards and models, and cultivating new ideas to make a transformational impact on science.

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual to join the Software Engineering Team as a DevOps Engineer.  This person will work in a collaborative environment to support a scalable data management system and high-throughput data pipeline which together store and process the multi-petabyte high-resolution data generated by the Institute.

  • Enjoys developing clean, maintainable code with an eye towards excellence, and considers both the short-term and long-term impact of their technical decisions

Essential Functions

  • Design and automate infrastructure deployments using code
  • Develop tests to validate that infrastructure-as-code deployments work when written, and continue to work in the future
  • Contribute to ongoing migration from on-premises systems to the public cloud
  • Deploy and maintain replicated database systems
  • Collaborate with developers to create and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment systems
  • Implement metrics, logging and monitoring systems to provide insight into the state of running systems
  • Follow Allen Institute standards for software development, cloud deployments, issue tracking and documentation
  • Work together with stakeholders and senior engineers to scope work and set timelines; proactively identify and help mitigate risks to project scope and timeline when needed to ensure milestones and deadlines are achieved

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related field and at least one year of experience in a DevOps, system administration or similar role, or equivalent combination of degree and experience 
  • Production experience with a common infrastructure-as-code framework, such as Ansible, Chef or Terraform
  • Production experience with one of: Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure
  • Experience writing scripts and automating tasks in a common scripting language
  • One year of experience administering common Linux distribution such as Ubuntu or Red Hat

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 2 - 4 years of experience in a DevOps, system administration or similar role
  • 2 - 4 years of experience administering common Linux distribution such as Ubuntu or Red Hat
  • Experience with relational database management
  • Experience defining infrastructure with Ansible and Terraform
  • Experience deploying complex infrastructure with multiple AWS products
  • Experience developing scripts in Python and Bash
  • Experience with large-scale Ubuntu deployments
  • Experience managing PostgreSQL and MongoDB
  • High-performance computing experience, ideally on a public cloud
  • Production experience with Kubernetes; EKS experience strongly preferred

Work Environment

  • May enter laboratory environment, including potential exposure to lasers, biohazards

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work remotely due to COVID-19 and our focus on employee safety. We continue to evaluate the safest options for our employees. As restrictions are lifted in relation to COVID-19, this role will return to work onsite.
