Data Analyst I/II - Brain Science

Department: 3440 - Molecular Biology
Location: Seattle

Data Analyst I Ė Brain Science

This position is an entry level position within the RSeq Core Team of the Molecular Biology group, which is an integral part of the Cell Types research program at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Primary responsibilities of this position include processing and QC of sequencing data.

This individual will work closely with PhD-level scientists, both in the lab and on the computational data analysis teams in support of various projects.  Each project requires specifically tailored analysis tools and data visualization.

This position requires a strong beginnerís background in computer science, experience with coding, some background in biology and/or chemistry, and a desire to work in a fast-paced team environment on large scientific projects.

Essential Functions

  • Perform initial QC of sequencing data.
  • Optimize data processing pipelines.
  • Develop software tools and methods to facilitate data analysis and visualization for various projects.
  • Support workflow of both lab scientists and secondary analysis teams.
  • Follow good coding practices.
  • Assist other staff as necessary.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to cross-train and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelorís Degree in computer science, computational neuroscience, mathematics, or related field.
  • 0-2 years related experience with scientific computing (Python and R preferred).
  • Experience in genomics data visualization tools. 
  • Some knowledge of statistics. 
  • Previous experience in processing and analyzing sequencing data.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Understanding of sequencing protocols and applications.
  • Experience processing and analyzing single cell RNA-Seq data and/or ATAC-Seq data.
  • Experience optimizing single cell analysis pipelines.
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g. postgres, SQL).
  • Experience using cloud platforms (AWS, GoogleCloud) for genomic data analysis.
  • Detail oriented / analytical mindset.
  • Exceptional attention to good coding practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work e?ectively within a team.

Work Environment

  • Working at a desk in an office or lab setting

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work remotely due to COVID-19 and our focus on employee safety; this may change, and you may be required to work onsite at our South Lake Union office as safety restrictions are lifted in relation to COVID-19.
