Scientist I - Electron Microscopist

Department: 2400 - Neural Coding
Location: Seattle

Scientist I   / Engineer Electron Microscopist 

We are seeking a Scientist / Engineer to be an essential member of a team investigating the relationship between the structure of cortical circuits and their function. The project is a large-scale effort combining electron microscopy, two-photon microscopy, genomics and computer modeling to obtain a comprehensive theory of how the mouse visual system codes and processes information.

The ideal candidate will lead the effort to develop techniques to prepare and cut large samples of mammalian cortex for electron microscopy. The Scientist should have experience with electron microscopy techniques be able to work in tight collaboration with engineers, microscopists, and physiologists.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and establish techniques for sectioning volumes containing a full hemisphere of mouse cortex.
  • Preparing large brain samples for electron microscopy
  • Integrate sectioning methods with electron microscopy imaging.
  • Contribute to the refinement of software for acquisition and analysis of large imaging data sets
  • Work efficiently in a collaborative team environment. Demonstrate integrity and credibility.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Neuroscience or related field.
  • Experience with microscopy techniques.
  • Experience with histological techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming experience is desirable (Python preferred)
  • Electron microscopy skills are desirable.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a part of a team.
  • Ability to meet aggressive timelines and deliverables.
