Research Associate II - Molecular Biology

Research Associate II – Molecular Biology 

The Research Associate II (RA II) will be part of the Molecular Biology team within the larger Structured Science department at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. The Molecular Biology team is responsible for performing core molecular biology techniques for the Allen Institute in a standardized, high throughput manner. This RA II will join the Single Cell RNASeq core team within Molecular Biology and will be responsible for amplification and library prep reactions for single cell transcriptomics.

The RA II is responsible for executing a wide variety of laboratory tasks and/or experiments in a production environment following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Good judgment and problem-solving skills are required for recognizing process deviations, participating in troubleshooting, and operation of complex laboratory instrumentation. The RA II is expected to comply with regulatory requirements, adhere to numerous SOPs, be capable of successfully contributing in a near GLP environment, and to work efficiently in a team environment.  A successful candidate possesses excellent attention to detail and the eagerness to work in a Team Science, deadline-driven atmosphere.


  • Prepare RNASeq libraries from single cells or nuclei in 96 or 384-well format.
  • Operate liquid handling instruments and other automation (including Agilent Bravo, Hamilton Starlet, Fragment Analyzer, Perkin Elmer Multiprobe, Agilent Bioanalyzer, Integra Mantis).
  • Meet production schedules.
  • Follow standard operation procedures and good laboratory practices.
  • Accurately record process notes.
  • Support small projects as a part of the Molecular Biology core team.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from four-year College or University.
  • 2 years' molecular biology experience.
  • Multi-channel pipetting and 96-well format skills.
  • Experience working in a “PCR Clean Hood”.
  • Liquid handling robotics experience.
  • Basic operating knowledge of computers. 
  • Experience working with MS Office, especially Excel. 


  • 2-4 years' molecular biology experience
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Excellent work ethic displayed as a reliable, self-motivated, enthusiastic team player.
  • 1+ years of experience in a molecular biology lab performing tasks involving cDNA and experience working in a pre/post PCR lab environment.
  • Ability to learn new software programs.


  • Bench top lab work requires multi-channel pipetting, single channel pipetting, computer data entry, and working in a PCR hood.
