Research Associate I - Human Cell Types

Research Associate I – Human Cell Types

We are seeking a BA/BS level Research Associate to join our Human Cell Types team at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. We are currently developing and applying cutting-edge approaches to explore the morphology, physiology, and gene expression signatures of human brain cells in tissue specimens derived from surgical excisions. 

Our goal is to establish a comprehensive multi-modal classification of human neocortical cell types, which will serve as a foundational resource for the basic and translational neuroscience community.

The RA hire will support tasks related to implementation and optimization of genetic labeling strategies in human slice cultures for our in vitro single cell characterization data pipeline. Specific tasks include 3D morphological reconstructions of virus-labeled human neurons, histological staining and imaging of human brain slices, and related data analysis projects. The ideal candidate will be highly self-motivated, capable of working independently at times, but also excited by the prospect of joining a vibrant team science environment at the Allen Institute.


  • 3D morphological reconstructions of human neurons from digital image stacks

  • Analysis of morphological features of single neurons

  • Immunohistochemistry on fixed human brain tissue

  • Confocal and epifluorescent imaging applications

  • Analysis and interpretation of histology image data

  • Support for human brain tissue collections from local hospitals

  • Regular presentation of results to the team

  • Must follow good laboratory practices and record keeping requirements


  • BA/BS with a background in neuroscience or biology is preferred

  • Experience with histology or neuroanatomy

  • 0-2 years of experience in a laboratory or research environment


  • Experience working in a timeline, milestone-driven, and team work environment

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a laboratory or research enviroment 

  • Proven analytical ability and proficiency in Python or R Studio is a bonus

  • Highly motivated researcher, comfortable operating independently

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
