Research Associate I - Lab Animal Services

Research Associate I - Lab Animal Services

The Research Associate I†is responsible for executing a variety of laboratory tasks and/or experiments in a high-throughput laboratory and animal care environment following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs). Good judgment and problem solving skills are required for recognizing process deviations, participating in troubleshooting, and operation of complex laboratory instrumentation. The Research Associate I, is expected to comply with regulatory requirements, adhere to SOPs and WIs, and to work efficiently in a team environment. Excellent manual dexterity, attention to detail and the willingness to work in a deadline-driven atmosphere is mandatory. The Research Associate I, is expected to work with moderate supervision on procedural tasks involving handling of mice.


  • Pre- and post-operative care for mice
  • Administration of compounds to mice (iv, ip, sc, po, im)
  • Perform health assessments
  • Perform euthanasia and tissue collections
  • Follow SOPs, WIs, and regulatory requirements
  • Perform other procedures under limited supervision and/or guidance
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and reporting using established methods
  • Work with Supervisor and or team leader, to adhere to appropriate management and prioritization of tasks and time, including daily and weekly scheduling
  • Perform daily vivarium closing procedures at the end of work day
  • Other duties as assigned
  • AALAS certification is a plus


  • Bachelorís degree in a life science preferred, or equivalent years of animal handling experience
  • 0-2 years of related work experience and/or training
  • Exceptional manual dexterity and attention to detail
  • Basic knowledge of mouse genetics, anatomy and/or behavior
  • Intermediate level ability with MS Office, MS Access and ability to learn other custom software systems (LIMS, LabTracks)


  • Handling of laboratory animals required
  • Laboratory duties involve safely handling or working near chemical, biological or other hazardous substances
  • Work requires proper use of personal protective equipment and engineering controls
  • Weekend and/or holiday work may be required
