Data Analyst I - Brain Science

Department: 2360- Neuroanatomy
Location: Seattle

The Data Analyst I – Seattle, WA. This position is an entry level position within the Morphology and 3D Reconstruction group, which is an integral part of the Cell Types research program at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Primary responsibilities of this position include image processing, analysis of morphological, neuroanatomical and gene expression data, and creation of software tools related to analysis, data generation and visualization.

This individual will work closely with PhD-level Neuroscientists on various data analysis projects related to understanding the relationship between neuron morphology, electrophysiology, connectivity and/or gene expression, and how that informs our understanding of cell types in the mammalian brain.

This position requires a strong background in computational neuroscience, computer science, or a related field, and a desire to work in a fast-paced team environment on large scientific projects. This person will report to the Senior Manager. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform primary data analysis towards answering specific biological questions.
  • Develop software tools and methods to facilitate neuroanatomical image processing, data analysis and visualization
  • Support workflow needs of semi-automated 3D neuron reconstruction based on image data
  • Follow good coding practices.
  • Assist other staff as necessary.


  • BA/BS in computational neuroscience, mathematics, computer science, or related field.
  • 1-2 years related experience with scientific computing (Python preferred)
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g. postgres, SQL)
  • Experience with scientific data visualization
  • Strong knowledge of mathematics, especially in statistics
  • Previous experience in image processing, or experience working with large-scale image datasets.
  • Ability to work across multiple and varied projects


  • Experience using machine learning algorithms for image processing
  • Experience with neuroanatomical and/or morphological data
  • Exceptional attention to good coding practices
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to work with fast timelines
  • Willingness to cross-train and perform other duties as assigned
