Senior People & Culture Business Partner

The mission of the Allen Institute is to unlock the complexities of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health. Using an open science, multi-scale, team-oriented approach, the Allen Institute focuses on accelerating foundational research, developing standards and models, and cultivating new ideas to make a broad, transformational impact on science.

The mission of the Allen Institute administration team is to provide support and structure to the scientific divisions. Coinciding with the team science approach, administration helps facilitate team learning and the overall mission of the institute.

We’re growing our People & Culture (P&C) team to track with the expanding reach of our scientific focus as we launch new Institutes and scientific departments. Operating like a high-performance startup within a well-established and funded non-profit, our team is scaling services, practice and delivery with the aim of unlocking overall resourcing capacity and collective velocity toward our Mission. In this role, you will partner with Scientific Business Unit leadership, P&C colleagues and Administration teams to support our evolving organizational and people engagement needs. This role is both strategic and hands-on, providing full-cycle human resources consultation, delivering people initiatives, coaching employees and managers through the employment lifecycle and optimizing P&C programs.

Essential Functions

  • Successfully establish and maintain professional, trusted relationships, strong customer focus and work effectively with leaders, managers and employees

  • Be a champion of the Allen Institute Mission and contribute to our Values-based culture by coaching leadership teams to improve engagement and effectiveness

  • Apply qualitative and quantitative data and a partnering approach with P&C colleagues and senior leadership to recommend, develop and implement solutions to address talent priorities, , employee engagement and development, performance management and recognition, organizational design and impact, succession planning, and program optimization

  • Coach managers on effective leadership strategies including tactical P&C processes as well as interventions involving leadership development and change management

  • Serve as a skilled facilitator of critical conversations, able to lead investigations, mediate when needed and provide practical advice

  • Apply expertise in Allen Institute guidelines, policies and procedures, tools and resources; Advise managers and employees on complex issues providing solid guidance on legal and regulatory trends

  • Serve in both lead and support roles as needed, ensuring projects are effectively prioritized, scoped and successfully delivered

  • Be a strong contributor and mentor within the overall People & Culture team, ensuring handoffs and processes are continuously improved across all scientific research institutes and administrative teams

  • Process Improvement: Proactively looking for ways to enhance our overall employee experience and improve our current processes

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus 7+ years in progressively responsible People & Culture (Human Resources) roles, having Generalist experience; or equivalent combination of degree and experience

  • Knowledge of human resources laws and processes

  • Human Resources information system (HRIS) experience

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Hands-on immigration experience working with employees on Visas and collaborating with outside legal counsel

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to navigate sensitive or ambiguous situations with a high level of diplomacy and discretion

  • Demonstrated ability identifying root causes of complex issues to design and implement practical solutions, both independently and within a collaborative team setting

  • Mindset of continuous learning and improvement to support customer needs

  • Demonstrated experience delivering P&C programs and related process improvements

  • Reputation for delivering high touch employee and manager experience

Physical Demands

  • Occasional lifting up to 20 pounds

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment; repetitive motion with lab equipment.

  • Stooping, bending, crouching

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • May require occasional evening and weekend hours

  • This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.

Travel

  • Occasional local travel to Dexter Yard or other Allen Institute locations

  • Attendance and participation in national and international conferences required [ note that travel may not be required to attend]

Annualized Salary Range

  • $128,050 - $176,055*

* Final salary depends on required education for the role, experience, and level of skills relevant to the role, along with work location, where applicable.
