UX Designer II / Web Developer

The goal of the Allen Institute for Immunology is to understand the dynamic balancing act of the human immune system, how it senses friend from foe and what goes wrong when we’re ill. This will help us to improve immune health and how we diagnose, treat and prevent immune-related diseases. Everything we do begins with patients who are living with and suffering from these diseases. We believe that by unlocking the mysteries of the immune system, we can make a significant improvement in patients’ health and wellbeing. The Institute, located on South Lake Union in Seattle, Washington, employs a multidisciplinary team approach where scientists, computational biologists and software engineers cooperate closely to meet these goals.

We’re looking for a UX Designer/Web Developer to join our agile team to bring elegance and simplicity to the end-user experience and formulate a powerful product offering. You will be responsible for delivering product designs and prototypes with a high degree of excellence, and for contributing to web development. This position has an expected end date of December 31, 2026 based on business needs and funding.

Essential Functions

• Work with a team of software engineers, scientists and computational biologists to transform complex requirements into software
• Create high-fidelity wireframes, concept and visual designs, and prototypes that solve real problems for our customers, based on data analysis, user research and interviews, and feedback loops
• Optimize existing user interface designs and provide insight on choices for such changes and updates
• Revise and update existing web pages to align with new design standards and improve user experience

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in human-centered design, information science (or related field), or equivalent combination of degree and experience
• 2+ years work experience as a UI/UX designer in a cloud-based environment
• Experience working with design tools for creating high-fidelity wireframes, preferably Figma

Preferred Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Communication Arts, Information Design or equivalent
• 2+ years work experience in web development
• Prior experience working in a research environment
• Prior experience working with a SAAS application
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Creative problem-solving skills

Work Environment

• May enter laboratory environment, including potential exposure to lasers, biohazards

Physical Demands

• Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment; lab equipment
• Working at a computer and using a mouse for extended periods of time

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

• Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required
• This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.

Annualized Salary Range

• $98,700 - $122,100 *

* Final salary depends on required education for the role, experience, and level of skills relevant to the role, along with work location, where applicable.
